To get a copy of your 1099 online, start with the organization that issued it and look in its tax-document portal. You can also check your IRS Individual Online Account for available information-return documents or download a wage and income transcript. These records differ: an IRS document may omit state information, and a transcript summarizes reported data rather than reproducing the complete payer copy. For unemployment or Social Security benefits, use the issuing agency’s own replacement service.
U.S. individual tax records · Reviewed October 10, 2026. Online access, available years, and correction procedures depend on the issuer and record type. This guide covers retrieving and checking documents.
Which 1099 are you looking for?
“1099” describes a family of forms, so record the letters after the number. A request for a 1099-NEC from a client goes to a different organization than a request for a 1099-R from a retirement-account custodian. The tax year is equally important: documents for money received in 2025 belong to the 2025 document set, even if you download them during 2026.
Before signing in anywhere, write down the form type, tax year, payer or agency, and account involved. Look at a previous statement, the original notification, or the issuer’s name in your payment records. If you received money from several organizations, make a separate request for each rather than assuming one portal contains every form.
| Form you need | Usual starting point | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC | The payer or its authorized payment service | Tax forms, contractor documents, or a recipient-document portal |
| 1099-K | The payment processor, app, or marketplace that issued it | Tax documents for the correct recipient account |
| 1099-INT or 1099-DIV | The issuing bank, brokerage, or other payer | Annual tax documents; some institutions group forms in one package |
| 1099-R | The pension administrator, retirement custodian, or other issuer | Distribution tax statements for the relevant account |
| 1099-G for unemployment | The state agency that paid the benefits | Annual tax information in the benefits portal |
| SSA-1099 | Social Security Administration | The replacement benefit-statement service |
Use the issuer’s own instructions for the exact document you need. These are starting points, not a guarantee that every account has an online tax center or that every payment requires a 1099. A blank form downloaded from a forms website is also different from your completed, issued tax document.
How do you get the payer’s 1099 online?
The payer is usually the best source for a complete recipient copy and any explanation of its figures. The IRS’s current online-account guidance directs recipients to contact the employer, payer, or issuing agency for a missing or corrected form.
- Open the issuer’s official website or app. Use an established account entry point. If a notification names a separate document service, confirm that service with the issuer before entering personal information.
- Sign in to the recipient account. Choose the account that received the payment, not a different personal or business profile with a similar name.
- Find the tax-document area. Common labels include Tax Forms, Tax Center, Statements, or Documents. The issuer determines the actual wording.
- Select the tax year and form. Check the form suffix and issuer before saving. A combined package may include more than one form or supporting statement.
- Save the complete document. Use the provided download or print control. Keep all relevant pages, including any explanation and corrected-form notice.
- Request a replacement if it is absent. Ask the issuer whether a form was issued, which portal contains it, and how to receive a copy if online access has ended.
Leaving a client, closing an account, or changing email addresses can affect access to its document portal. Use the organization’s recipient support channel to recover access or request another delivery method. A former account login that no longer works does not mean the payment or its tax record disappeared.
A focused replacement request
Please provide my recipient copy of Form [1099 type] for tax year [year], issued by [payer] for [account ending or other approved reference]. I cannot access the original through [portal or delivery method]. Please confirm whether a corrected version exists and send the document through your secure delivery process. Let me know how to verify my identity if necessary.
This request distinguishes a copy from a correction. If you already know an amount is disputed, identify the particular box and supporting transaction separately. Do not ask support simply to change the total to match a bank balance.
Can you see your 1099 in an IRS online account?
Yes, certain available information-return documents can be viewed in your IRS Individual Online Account. The IRS account overview lists this service alongside transcripts. Its February 2026 account announcement specifically identifies access to information-return documents, including Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC.
Enter through the official IRS account page, complete the identity-verification process, and look under Records and Status for available information-return documents. The February 2026 announcement identifies tax years 2023, 2024, and 2025 for this service. Select the relevant year, payer, and form. Use the account’s current viewing and download options; check the displayed availability for your requested year.
The IRS online-account FAQ explains several limits: documents appear as the IRS receives them and are updated weekly; the display includes federal information, while state and local fields may be grayed out. Other unavailable fields can also be grayed out. Obtain the complete form from the issuer when you need those details.
The same FAQ says that information-return documents are shown for the person to whom they were issued. A spouse must retrieve their own documents from their own account, including when the couple files jointly. An absent document is therefore a reason to check the recipient, year, and issuer—not to conclude that the income was zero.

How do you download a wage and income transcript?
Choose the wage and income transcript when you need the IRS’s record of information returns it has received. It can help locate payer and reported-income details, but it is a different record from the complete form supplied by an issuer.
Start at the IRS’s Get your tax records and transcripts page and sign in to your Individual Online Account. In the tax-records area, open transcripts, choose Wage and Income, and select the year you are researching. View, print, or download the available transcript. The IRS provides transcripts without a download fee.
According to the IRS transcript-type guide, wage and income transcripts cover information returns it receives, including 1099s. They are available for the current and nine prior tax years. Information for the current processing year generally starts appearing in the first week of February, but only documents filed with the IRS appear; the transcript may not contain every form issued to you.
| Record | Useful for | Limit to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Payer’s recipient copy | The complete issued form and its supporting pages | Availability and account access depend on the issuer. |
| IRS information-return document | Viewing an available individual document received by the IRS | Federal information only; some fields may be unavailable. |
| Wage and income transcript | Reviewing reported information-return data for a year | A data record rather than the complete payer copy; it may be incomplete. |
What if the transcript is unavailable?
The IRS transcript FAQ says a “No record of return filed” message on the current-year wage and income transcript can mean data has not populated yet. It also identifies an approximately 85-income-document limit for online transcript generation. Follow the displayed instructions instead of treating either message as a list of every payment you received.
If you cannot use online access, Form 4506-T is an alternative for requesting a wage and income transcript. Select that record type and the relevant year using the current form instructions. The standard Get Transcript by Mail service offers tax return and tax account transcripts; selecting one of those will not turn it into a wage and income record. The IRS describes that distinction on its transcript-ordering pages.
A transcript partially masks identifying information. Preserve that masking and ask the organization requesting the record which details it needs. Keep a note of the date you retrieved it, especially when you are comparing it with a form received later.
Where do you get unemployment and Social Security 1099s?
Unemployment: use the paying state’s 1099-G service
Find the state agency that issued your unemployment benefits and use its tax-information instructions. Payment history and an annual 1099-G answer different questions: the first helps identify individual payments; the second reports annual tax information.
For a specific example, California EDD’s current 1099G instructions direct recipients to sign in to myEDD, open UI Online, select Payments, and then Form 1099G. Information is available for five years, and the form for the completed year is available by January 31. The page also explains printing information or requesting a paper copy.
EDD warns that an adjusted 1099G is not available through UI Online. Follow its support instructions if you need that adjusted record or disagree with an amount. Other states have their own portals and rules. Our unemployment payment-records guide explains how to collect agency records for individual payments alongside annual tax documents.
Social Security: request a replacement SSA-1099
The Social Security Administration’s replacement-statement instructions say to sign in to your personal my Social Security account, open Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S, choose the year, and select Download. Replacement statements are available for the past six years for which benefits were paid; the latest completed year’s statement becomes available beginning February 1.
SSA lists telephone and office assistance if online access is not available. It does not generate these forms for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Confirm the benefit program before assuming that a missing SSA-1099 is an account error.
How do you check multiple copies or corrected forms?
Match documents by tax year, issuer, recipient, form type, and relevant box. Retrieving the same payment information in three places does not create three separate payments. Compare records before adding amounts to your own income summary.
Fictional example: A client’s 2025 Form 1099-NEC reports $9,360.00 in box 1. An available IRS document and the wage and income transcript show the same payer, year, and reported amount. The recipient’s payment ledger also supports $9,360.00. Assume all three tax records describe the same compensation and no correction or additional payer is involved.
| Record reviewed | Reported amount | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Payer’s recipient copy | $9,360.00 | The issued form for this compensation |
| Available IRS document | $9,360.00 | Another record of the same reported compensation |
| Wage and income transcript entry | $9,360.00 | A data entry for the same payer and form |
The amount identified in this example remains $9,360.00. Adding three views would produce $9,360.00 × 3 = $28,080.00, an overcount of $18,720.00. This illustrates document reconciliation, not a calculation of taxable profit or tax due. Different payers, distinct account records, or genuinely separate payments need their own review.

Check the version as well as the amount
If a later form is marked corrected, save both versions and ask the issuer which reporting it replaces. Keep the explanation with your documents. A fresh download date by itself does not show that a tax figure was corrected.
For Form 1099-K, the IRS’s current checking instructions direct recipients with incorrect information to the issuer, or the identified payment settlement entity when needed. The IRS cannot correct that form for the issuer. Its gross amount can differ from deposited funds because fees, refunds, and other adjustments are not deducted from the reported gross payment amount; compare the processor’s records before calling the difference an error.
Keep wage records and non-wage tax records in separate parts of your file. A payroll voucher identifies a paycheck record, while a tax form describes reported annual information. Our check-number guide explains how to identify a wage payment when you are matching records and deposits.
What should you do if the form is still missing?
- Confirm the year, recipient, and issuer. Check personal versus business account details and whether you are requesting a form belonging to someone else.
- Ask whether the issuer created the form. Request a recipient copy or a written explanation of where it is available. A reporting threshold or an account-access issue may require a different next step.
- Check another appropriate record. Review available IRS documents or the wage and income transcript, recognizing their limits. Use the benefit agency’s replacement process for its statements.
- Collect the underlying records. Save transaction histories, payment summaries, correspondence, and the specific discrepancy. These help the issuer investigate.
- Keep a request log. Record the organization contacted, date, document/year requested, case reference, and promised next step. Follow up using the same case where possible.
A missing document does not remove an income-reporting obligation. If you are preparing a return, use the appropriate IRS instructions or obtain qualified tax help to determine how to report your actual income while resolving the record. The right treatment depends on the form and payment; a missing 1099-K, a disputed unemployment form, and a missing retirement statement are different situations.
IRS Topic 154 describes additional help for missing or incorrect W-2 and 1099-R forms, including Form 4852 when applicable. That substitute is specifically for a W-2 or 1099-R; it is not a universal replacement for every 1099. A recipient-created 1099 or pay stub does not become the issuer’s missing official copy.
How should you save and share the records?
Use a folder for each tax year and a filename that identifies the issuer and form without including your full taxpayer identification number. For example, 2025-PayerA-1099NEC-recipient-copy.pdf is clearer than an unlabeled download. If there is a correction, distinguish it in the filename and keep a note explaining the relationship.
Maintain a simple checklist: issuer, form, year, source, retrieved date, complete or partial, correction status, and unresolved questions. Store the complete originals securely. Make a separate appropriately redacted copy if a permitted recipient needs only limited information.
If a lender, landlord, or other organization requests “a 1099,” ask which form and year it needs and whether it accepts an IRS record or requires the issuer’s complete copy. Confirm its own requirements before assuming a transcript will meet them. An annual form also may not establish a current pay rate or current benefits.
Enter government services through their official sites and keep account credentials private. The IRS’s tax-records page notes that it does not initiate email, text, or social-media requests for personal or financial information. Resolve unexpected document messages through an established account or issuer contact.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get my 1099 directly from the IRS online?
You can view certain available information-return documents in your Individual Online Account and download a wage and income transcript. The issuer remains the source for a complete recipient form, including information omitted from the IRS display.
Is a wage and income transcript the same as my 1099?
It is a record of reported information-return data. It does not reproduce the payer’s complete form or supporting pages, and it may not contain every document issued to you.
How many years of wage and income transcripts are available?
The IRS lists the current and nine prior tax years. Availability still depends on the records received and the transcript service’s limits; payer portals and benefit agencies have their own access periods.
What if I cannot sign in to the IRS account?
Request a copy from the issuer first. For a wage and income transcript, review Form 4506-T and its current submission instructions. The standard online mail-order service offers different transcript types.
Can I retrieve my spouse’s forms from my IRS account?
The IRS account FAQ says information-return documents appear in the account of the person to whom they were issued. Your spouse must retrieve their own documents, even if you file a joint return.
Can I use a pay stub instead of a missing 1099?
A pay stub supports payroll earnings and deductions. It does not replace an issuer’s missing 1099 or establish the right tax treatment of a non-wage payment. Ask for the official form and use the relevant reporting instructions.
