The Maine paycheck calculator combines the selected W-4ME annual percentage method with a separate paid family and medical leave contribution. Its revised 2026 state calculation rounds paycheck withholding to whole dollars. The covered standard employee PFML share is modeled at 0.5% up to the applicable wage cap; actual employer payment or coverage can change that separate line.

Maine review dated October 29, 2026 · This original case uses the revised August 2026 method, ordinary wages with one employer, Maine residence and employment, and 26 equal biweekly payments. The tool also offers 2025.

Use the Maine Paycheck Calculator with the recorded W-4ME status, allowance count and actual PFML treatment. The example below explains why state income tax can appear as $202 while the other paycheck deductions retain cents.

Which 2026 Maine method is being compared?

Maine Revenue Services announced revised withholding tables in August 2026 reflecting deduction changes and a new high-income surcharge. The tool's 2026 projection uses the revised method throughout the modeled year. It does not reconstruct checks actually calculated under an earlier 2026 table.

The revised percentage instructions annualize wages, subtract the applicable withholding deduction and $5,300 per supplied allowance, apply the schedule, then divide and round the payment deduction to the nearest dollar. In the original Single case below, the withholding deduction is $12,850.

The publication distinguishes its payroll-method deductions from basic return deduction amounts. Use the figure specified for the withholding method when reconciling the tool. Copying a return deduction into that step can make an otherwise correct calculation fail to match.

W-4ME choices remain separate from federal W-4 entries. The state tool offers Single, including married withholding at the Single rate, and Married. Verify the actual state election rather than assuming the federal filing selection supplies every state instruction.

How does the original state calculation become $202 per check?

Assume $98,800 annual wages over twenty-six $3,800 biweekly payments in 2026. Supply the Maine Single group, one W-4ME allowance and no extra state withholding. These are fictional recorded inputs for explaining the method, not recommendations for an employee's certificate.

The annual wage amount is below the Single deduction phaseout starting point used by the revised method. Subtract $12,850 and one $5,300 allowance from $98,800 to obtain $80,650 for the state schedule.

For that amount, the applicable annual expression is $4,117 + [7.15% × ($80,650 − $64,850)]. The excess is $15,800, so the annual expression gives $5,246.70. Dividing by 26 gives $201.796153… before whole-dollar rounding.

Original Maine Single case: one allowance and 26 biweekly checks
State calculation stageAmount
Annual wages assumed$98,800.00
Withholding-method standard deduction$12,850.00
One annual allowance reduction$5,300.00
Annual amount for the state schedule$80,650.00
Annual schedule result$5,246.70
Per check, before whole-dollar rounding$201.796153…
Rounded state deduction each check$202.00
Sum of 26 rounded state deductions$5,252.00

The rounded paycheck sum exceeds the annual expression by $5.30. That difference follows from repeating a whole-dollar result on each check. It is not an additional allowance, surcharge or fee.

Do not round every other tax to whole dollars merely because this state method does. Federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare and the PFML amount follow their separate calculations in the reviewed tool.

The original revised Maine 2026 calculation subtracts 12850 dollars and one 5300 dollar allowance from 98800 dollars, giving 80650 dollars for the schedule and 202 dollars state withholding after dividing by 26 and rounding to whole dollars.
The state income-tax deduction is rounded separately from the PFML contribution.

How is the employee PFML line different from state income tax?

The Maine Department of Labor's 2026 program report describes the contribution structure and the $184,500 covered-wage cap for 2026. Employers with at least 15 employees have a combined 1% contribution and may deduct up to half from employees. Smaller employers contribute 0.5% and may deduct that amount from employees.

The employee share in the standard modeled case is therefore 0.5%, not the full combined 1% amount. Our fictional $3,800 covered paycheck produces $19, totaling $494 over the year. Annual covered wages stay below the cap.

The tool lets the reviewer select standard coverage, employer payment of the employee share or an applicable not-covered treatment. Those settings must reflect actual circumstances. A private or negotiated arrangement requires its own information and should not be treated as automatically equivalent to the standard calculation.

PFML-covered wages are a program-specific basis. The example assumes they equal the $3,800 gross amount, but a real income-tax exclusion should not automatically be carried into a program contribution without checking its wage definition.

What remains after all listed deductions in the original case?

Keep federal status Single, Step 2 off and every optional federal dollar adjustment at zero. Assume ordinary covered wages and gross equal to the federal, FICA and Maine income-tax bases. No local or other after-tax amount is entered, and standard employee PFML applies.

Fictional revised-2026 Maine paycheck with standard employee PFML
Payroll lineBiweekly amountAnnual sum
Gross wages$3,800.00$98,800.00
Federal withholding$496.38$12,905.88
Maine withholding$202.00$5,252.00
Employee Social Security$235.60$6,125.60
Employee Medicare$55.10$1,432.60
Employee PFML$19.00$494.00
Pay after listed deductions$2,791.92$72,589.92

The original subtraction is $3,800 − $496.38 − $202 − $235.60 − $55.10 − $19 = $2,791.92. The live calculator matches independent decimal arithmetic. Additional actual payroll items can change the bank deposit.

For the separate federal worksheet, see the federal withholding guide. Its annual credits or deductions do not automatically replace the state allowance count.

What if the employer actually pays the employee PFML share?

Change only PFML treatment from standard employee payment to employer-paid, assuming the employer's actual arrangement supports that choice. The employee PFML line becomes zero. The modeled state income tax remains $202.

Pay after listed deductions becomes $2,810.92 per check and $73,083.92 annually. The increase is $19 each payment, or $494 over 26 checks. This comparison concerns who bears the employee contribution; it does not determine benefit eligibility or promise an employer-funded arrangement.

The Department of Labor's employer information discusses ongoing contributions and approved private-plan substitution. Verify the actual payroll treatment before selecting a setting that removes a deduction.

In the original Maine wage case, standard employee PFML is 19 dollars per check and net is 2791 dollars 92 cents; when the employer actually pays that share, the employee PFML line is zero and modeled net becomes 2810 dollars 92 cents.
Changing the supported PFML treatment leaves the separate state withholding calculation unchanged.

How does the tool handle an extra state amount with cents?

For a separate observed comparison, restore standard employee PFML and enter $8.40 extra state withholding. This version first rounds the calculated base to $202, adds the supplied extra amount and rounds the resulting state total to whole dollars. Its displayed state deduction is $210.

Modeled pay after listed deductions becomes $2,783.92 each check and $72,381.92 annually. The actual modeled increase in state withholding is $8 per check, totaling $208. Do not infer a repeated $8.40 difference from the field alone when reviewing this version's whole-dollar result.

The current National Finance Center Maine bulletin also describes rounding the base payment amount, adding elected extra withholding and rounding again. Its implementation date applies to that payroll system. For an actual certificate election, confirm how payroll will implement the requested amount and review the resulting state line. A calculator entry does not submit or sign the employee's W-4ME.

What should higher-income and actual-payroll reviews include?

The revised method phases out its withholding deduction as annualized wages increase and adds a 2% surcharge above its specified high-income thresholds. A fixed-deduction shortcut cannot reproduce every wage level. Check the current published steps and actual state status when moving beyond the original example.

The annual projection applies one selected method across the year. Actual earlier checks may use different wages, certificates or published tables. Keep year-to-date records separate from a full-year scenario rather than treating the projection as an automatic correction of past payroll.

The local and other fields are known annual after-tax amounts. They reduce pay without classifying pretax benefits or changing individual tax bases. Multiple employers, interstate work, special exemptions, supplemental wages and irregular schedules need further information.

The Social Security ceiling explanation and Medicare withholding explanation help distinguish federal threshold timing from Maine tax and PFML. An annual average does not necessarily describe the actual check crossing a cap.

The estimate is free. Return filing and evidence of wages require their own actual documents. Prepare any separate pay statement from genuine records, and review actual deduction labels before treating the remaining modeled pay as a deposit amount.
