The Missouri paycheck calculator uses the recorded MO W-4 group to select a standard deduction, applies the graduated annual withholding schedule and rounds the paycheck state amount to whole dollars. It has no personal-allowance count. Local earnings tax is separate, so a result with no entered local amount is before any applicable missing city withholding.
Missouri review dated October 29, 2026 · This original 2026 example assumes ordinary employee wages, one employer, Missouri residence and work, and twelve equal monthly payments. The tool also offers 2025.
Open the Missouri Paycheck Calculator and verify its state group independently of the federal selection. This guide follows $92,400 annual wages and includes a conditional Kansas City earnings-tax illustration entered as a separate known local amount.
Why does the spouse-work choice matter?
The official 2026 Missouri formula assigns a $16,100 annual deduction to Single, married separate and married with a working spouse. The spouse-does-not-work choice uses $32,200, and head of household uses $24,150.
The actual MO W-4 certificate presents those withholding choices together with an additional-dollar entry. The spouse-does-not-work box controls a withholding deduction; it is not a new legal filing status created by the calculator.
A federal joint selection does not establish whether the spouse works or determine the correct state certificate choice. Inspect the state group after entering federal information and match it to the actual employer record.
This method has no personal or dependent allowance-count field. Do not copy an old allowance total or federal credit dollars into another box to imitate a count-based system. The current certificate and the selected year's formula govern the comparison.
The original scenario uses the state tool's Other group, covering Single and the other $16,100 choices. Federal Single is separately fixed, with optional adjustments zero and the multiple-jobs checkbox off. These are reproducible assumptions rather than recommendations for a household.
How does $7,700 monthly gross produce $284 state withholding?
Assume $92,400 annual wages over twelve equal $7,700 payments in 2026. Subtract the $16,100 state withholding deduction to obtain $76,300 annual Missouri wages for the schedule.
The current National Finance Center Missouri formula gives the upper-range expression as $263 plus 4.7% of the amount exceeding $9,436. For this example, the excess is $76,300 − $9,436 = $66,864.
Multiplying $66,864 by 4.7% gives $3,142.608. Adding $263 produces $3,405.608 annually before period rounding. Dividing by twelve gives $283.800666… , and the modeled whole-dollar paycheck deduction is $284.
| Calculation stage | Amount |
|---|---|
| Annual wages assumed | $92,400.00 |
| Selected annual deduction | $16,100.00 |
| Annual wages for the state schedule | $76,300.00 |
| Excess above $9,436 | $66,864.00 |
| Annual graduated expression | $3,405.608 |
| State amount each check after whole-dollar rounding | $284.00 |
| Sum of twelve rounded state deductions | $3,408.00 |
The annual payroll sum follows from repeating $284. It is not the same as the unrounded annual expression, and neither amount by itself determines the final return balance.
The 4.7% top rate is applied to the relevant excess after the deduction and lower schedule amounts. Multiplying all gross wages by 4.7% would skip those parts of the calculation.

What remains before an unentered city earnings tax?
Assume gross equals federal income-tax, FICA and state taxable wages. No pretax benefits are classified, and the local and other after-tax fields are zero. Additional state withholding is also zero.
| Pay line | Each month | Annual sum |
|---|---|---|
| Gross wages | $7,700.00 | $92,400.00 |
| Federal withholding | $958.17 | $11,498.04 |
| Missouri withholding | $284.00 | $3,408.00 |
| Employee Social Security | $477.40 | $5,728.80 |
| Employee Medicare | $111.65 | $1,339.80 |
| Pay before unentered local and other deductions | $5,868.78 | $70,425.36 |
The monthly subtraction is $7,700 − $958.17 − $284 − $477.40 − $111.65 = $5,868.78 before unentered local or other items. Independent calculations agree with the live tool. The federal withholding guide explains the federal worksheet separately.
What does the head-of-household state group change?
For an isolated arithmetic comparison, assume the state certificate properly supports head-of-household treatment and change only that state input. This test keeps federal inputs fixed to identify the state effect; it does not advise matching or changing real federal elections in that manner.
The state deduction becomes $24,150, leaving $68,250 annual schedule wages. The annual state expression is $263 + [4.7% × ($68,250 − $9,436)] = $3,027.258.
The monthly deduction rounds to $252. Pay after the same listed taxes becomes $5,900.78 monthly before missing local or other deductions, or $70,809.36 annually under those limited assumptions. An actual head-of-household claim requires its own eligibility review.
The $32 monthly difference is the effect of two rounded state amounts. It is not a promise that changing a filing choice produces a tax saving on the final return.
How can a confirmed Kansas City earnings-tax amount be included?
For a separate comparison, restore the original Other state group. The official Kansas City earnings-tax page describes a 1% tax on covered earnings, including residents' earnings and nonresidents' earnings within the city. Actual applicability and wage classification must be established separately.
Assume this fictional employee is a full-year Kansas City resident and an independent payroll review confirms that all $92,400 in the example is covered compensation at 1%, with no exclusion or allocation adjustment. The confirmed annual local amount is then $924, or $77 across twelve equal checks.
Enter $924 as the annual local input. The tool does not calculate that city rate itself. Pay after entered deductions becomes $5,791.78 monthly and $69,501.36 annually, while state withholding remains $284.
This illustration should not be applied automatically to every Missouri worker. Actual city residence, work location, covered earnings, exemptions and collection timing can differ. A local amount already included in a combined payroll line should not be deducted a second time.

How are extra state dollars handled?
The current certificate provides additional withholding per pay period. The reviewed calculator rounds the computed state base to whole dollars, adds the supplied extra amount and rounds the total to whole dollars again. The current federal payroll bulletin describes the same sequence.
Consequently, an extra entry with cents can have a different observed effect after the final rounding step. Check the displayed state line and annual sum rather than assuming an unrounded entry will always repeat unchanged.
For an actual election, identify the intended number of payments, employer implementation and withholding already collected. Comparing an amount here does not deliver an MO W-4 or establish the right adjustment for a household with other income.
Which actual payroll details remain outside the example?
The main field is annual gross wages. Weekly, biweekly, semimonthly and monthly correspond to 52, 26, 24 and twelve modeled payments. Known local and other entries are annual after-tax money; extra state and federal withholding are per payment.
The ordinary full-year projection does not reconstruct earlier certificate changes, allocate interstate wages or determine exempt status. The state's publication describes separate supplemental-pay procedures. A bonus should not automatically be treated as another equal ordinary check.
Insurance and retirement contributions may affect tax bases differently. Entering their cost as an after-tax other deduction leaves the modeled taxable wages fixed. Actual payroll can therefore differ even when gross wages match.
The Social Security wage-ceiling guide and Medicare threshold guide explain federal limits separately. An average projected payment may not describe the actual check crossing a threshold.
The calculator is free. It does not file a return, remit local tax or verify earnings. Any separate wage statement should reflect genuine payroll records.

This method uses the recorded deduction group and has no personal-allowance count field.
Does federal joint status establish the spouse-does-not-work choice?
No. Verify the actual state certificate and spouse-work facts.
Does zero local mean no earnings tax applies?
It means no supported annual local amount has been entered.
Is the highest percentage applied to all gross pay?
The calculation uses the selected deduction and graduated schedule first.
The Check Stubs Online Editorial Team reviewed current Missouri and Kansas City primary sources and independently checked three fictional live scenarios. The original case leaves $5,868.78 monthly before unentered local or other deductions.
