The 1099-OID builder prepares supported original-issue-discount statements from security-level accrual and payer records for 2025 or 2026. Identify the obligation, distinguish OID from periodic interest, and check whether acquisition premium is separately reported or already netted. The document order does not calculate every security’s accrual or submit an information return.
Reviewed October 29, 2026 · The tool uses the continuous-use original with a seven-page packet. The worked example concerns one eligible taxable covered obligation, with reviewed accrual and acquisition-premium amounts.
Use the 1099-OID statement builder with the issuer or broker’s actual records. OID may be reportable as it accrues even before cash is received. That timing difference is one reason a bank deposit alone cannot establish the correct statement amount.
Why does the security description matter?
The statement identifies the payer, recipient and particular debt obligation. Keep the security description or CUSIP accurate. The joint 1099-INT/1099-OID reporting instructions generally call for a separate 1099-OID for each discount obligation a person holds, rather than combining unrelated securities into one descriptive field.
The same payer and recipient can therefore have multiple statements for different obligations. An account number may help identify the account, but it does not replace the instrument description or the recipient’s tax identifier.
Match the recipient’s legal name and identifier to the appropriate documentation. Our W-9 identification guide explains that separate record. A W-9 does not establish an annual discount accrual.
Select the actual reporting year, 2025 or 2026. The continuous-use original’s revision date is not the calendar-year entry. An expected maturity payment in a later year does not mean all annual OID waits until that maturity date.
If you are a recipient seeking an issuer’s missing or corrected statement, contact the issuer or broker. Do not create a document claiming to have been issued by another payer merely because you can enter its name into a form.
Is OID the same as the cash coupon or a change in market price?
No. Original issue discount, qualified stated interest, market discount and premium describe different features of a debt instrument. A security’s current market-price decline is not itself the annual OID amount.
IRS Publication 1212 explains the general annual accrual treatment, exceptions and security-specific methods. Establish the holding period, issue information, acquisition facts and applicable adjustments before preparing the statement.
The builder asks for reviewed OID in Box 1 and other periodic interest in Box 2. Those are separate inputs. It does not derive the required annual accrual from only a purchase price, a maturity value or a CUSIP.
A recipient may need to adjust a reported figure under the applicable rules, and an issuer may need to correct an inaccurate statement. Preserve the distinction between a recipient’s own return worksheet and the payer’s authorized reporting record.
Our 1099-INT preparation guide covers the related interest statement. The proper form and box depend on the instrument and reporting rules, not simply on whether an amount is commonly described as interest.

How can $900 of gross OID become a $750 reported result?
Assume one fictional taxable covered obligation has $900 of annual gross OID and $150 of properly calculated acquisition-premium amortization. The applicable rules permit the gross or net presentation described below. These are reviewed inputs, not amounts the builder determines from the purchase price.
| Presentation | Box 1 OID | Box 6 acquisition premium | Result under these facts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross with separate premium | $900 | $150 | $900 − $150 = $750. |
| Already net OID | $750 | $0 | The premium offset is already included. |
Both presentations can describe the same adjusted annual OID result when their conditions apply. They should not be used together for the same obligation and amount.
If Box 1 already contains the $750 net figure, subtracting $150 again would incorrectly produce $600. Conversely, merely seeing a premium in an acquisition record does not establish that the entire premium is this year’s allowed amortization.
Check whether the security is covered, which premium rule applies, and the actual annual amortization. Noncovered and tax-exempt instruments can have different reporting requirements. Do not copy this taxable covered-obligation example into every bond transaction.
Where does the example’s $300 periodic interest go?
Assume the same obligation also has $300 of qualified stated interest properly reported in Box 2 and no other adjustments. Under the net presentation, the statement shows $750 in Box 1, zero in Box 6 and $300 in Box 2.
| Component | Amount | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Gross annual OID | $900 | Before the permitted premium adjustment. |
| Annual acquisition-premium adjustment | $150 | Applied once. |
| Net OID | $750 | $900 − $150. |
| Separate qualified stated interest | $300 | Proper Box 2 amount under the assumed rules. |
| Combined interest result | $1,050 | $750 + $300, before any other applicable adjustments. |
The $1,050 is not necessarily cash received. Under the illustration, the OID is an accrual and the $300 stated interest is the separate cash-interest record. The final tax treatment still depends on the recipient and instrument facts.
The same result follows from the gross presentation: $900 − $150 + $300 = $1,050. Keep the presentation consistent from payer records through the recipient’s reconciliation.

How do Treasury and tax-exempt OID differ?
Treasury OID has its separate Box 8 and is not included again in Box 1. The instructions permit a negative Box 8 amount in applicable circumstances, such as a Treasury Inflation-Protected Security deflation adjustment. Use the actual supported record rather than forcing every entry positive.
Tax-exempt OID uses Box 11 and its applicable rules. Tax-exempt status does not mean the security can be left out of all reporting or basis records. It also does not make every related state or other tax question disappear.
These are different instrument categories, not extra boxes to fill for the fictional corporate obligation above. Keep each obligation’s statement and related premium treatment separate.
The continuous-use IRS 1099-OID original shows the distinct fields and recipient instructions. Review the instrument description as carefully as the dollar amount when selecting its route.
What other fields need independent support?
Market discount is separate from original issue discount and acquisition premium. Bond premium relates to its applicable interest treatment and should not be treated as interchangeable with acquisition-premium amortization. Preserve the source calculations for each.
An early-withdrawal penalty, investment expense or other adjustment must fit the specific reporting rules. Do not use an adjustment box merely to reduce a total to the amount of cash deposited.
Federal withholding reports what was actually withheld. The timing and amount of backup withholding can involve the relevant cash-payment rules even where OID accrues earlier. The builder neither decides the obligation nor remits the tax.
State withholding entries require actual state records and the relevant state payer identifier. The supported up-to-two-state section does not mean the federal total should be duplicated for each state.
Use corrected and FATCA flags only where the conditions apply. A corrected PDF still needs the required agency correction and recipient-furnishing procedure.
What remains after the download?
The packet contains seven original pages. Copies 1, B and 2 receive the entered information, while red Copy A remains blank. Inspect all relevant populated copies and the original instructions before use.
Agency filing and recipient delivery are separate from the buyer’s PDF access. Check the applicable year’s deadline, electronic-filing requirement and correction rules. Do not print the informational red Copy A and assume it is a compliant scannable filing.
Retain the instrument’s accrual, acquisition, premium and basis records alongside any issued or corrected statement. The recipient’s separately prepared main tax return must use the appropriate taxable or exempt amounts and any required supporting schedules.
Read the current preview and service price before checkout. Free blank originals are available from the IRS. The order does not guarantee the instrument’s tax treatment, submit the statement or pay any withholding.
1099-OID preparation questions
Can OID be reportable before the issuer pays cash?
Generally yes, subject to the instrument’s rules and exceptions. Annual accrual and cash receipt can occur at different times.
Should every discount security be combined on one form?
Generally issue a separate statement for each obligation under the reporting instructions.
Can I subtract acquisition premium from an amount already net of that premium?
No. Apply the adjustment once and keep the gross or net presentation consistent.
Is Treasury OID included in ordinary Box 1 OID?
No. The applicable Treasury amount uses Box 8 separately.
Does the PDF order calculate and file every security’s accrual?
No. Supply reviewed security records and handle the required filing separately.
The Check Stubs Online Editorial Team reviewed the live two-year OID builder and primary accrual guidance. The original taxable covered-obligation example checks $900 − $150 = $750 and $750 + $300 = $1,050, without duplicating the premium adjustment.
