The 2025 Schedule 1 builder places reviewed additional income in Part I and allowed adjustments in Part II, with separate totals for the main return. Prepare the source schedules and eligibility calculations first. The product generates the original two-page PDF; it does not decide every tax treatment or prepare Schedule 1-A’s separate deductions.
Reviewed October 29, 2026 · The live builder supports final 2025 pages; 2026 is unavailable. The numerical illustration assumes the specified income classifications and deductions have been reviewed.
Open the Schedule 1 online builder with your completed source work nearby. Its most useful role is organizing amounts that have already been established, while keeping income, adjustments and informational notices from being confused.
Why does Schedule 1 have two separate totals?
Part I reports additional income that feeds the main return’s income calculation. Part II reports adjustments used in arriving at adjusted gross income. They are not two competing versions of the same total, and the schedule does not simply subtract its Page 2 total from Page 1 and transfer one net number.
On the 2025 original Schedule 1, Line 10 carries to the main return’s Line 8, while Line 26 carries to the main return’s Line 10. Use those destinations consistently when assembling Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR, as applicable.
Form 1040-NR filers should follow its separate line instructions and exceptions. The general Form 1040 discussion does not make every income category or deduction available on a nonresident return.
Schedule 1 also differs from Schedule 1-A. The latter covers eligible qualified-tip, overtime, qualifying personal vehicle-loan-interest and enhanced senior deductions. The IRS explanation of Schedule 1-A describes that separate form. Do not place an amount on Schedule 1 merely because its name contains the word “deduction.”
Before entering numbers, confirm the tax year and names against the underlying return. For a joint return, follow the original name and identifier conventions. The current tool’s disabled 2026 choice should not be treated as a final available 2026 document.
Which source records belong in additional income?
Use the specific source line rather than entering every receipt under “other income.” A completed business or rental schedule generally contributes its reviewed result, not gross deposits from the same activity repeated on another line.
| Income source | Builder destination | What to establish first |
|---|---|---|
| Nonfarm business | Schedule C result, Line 3. | The business’s correctly prepared net amount and applicable limitations. |
| Rental or pass-through source | Schedule E result, Line 5. | The source categories, allowed losses and required supporting work. |
| Farming business | Schedule F result, Line 6. | The farm method, reviewed costs and allowed result. |
| Taxable unemployment | Line 7. | The appropriate taxable amount and any same-year repayment treatment. |
| Certain other gains or losses | Line 4 and relevant source flags. | The applicable Form 4797 or 4684 calculation. |
| Other specified income | The appropriate Line 8 category. | Whether the amount is taxable and already reported elsewhere. |
Our separate Schedule C, Schedule E and Schedule F guides explain those tools’ inputs and boundaries. Preparing Schedule 1 does not generate those supporting schedules.
Other categories include jury pay, certain awards, cancellation-of-debt income and specific foreign or account-related items. Each has its own treatment. A cancellation-of-debt document, for example, should not be copied without considering any applicable exclusion and separate form requirements.
Taxable state or local income-tax refunds also require a review of the underlying tax-benefit rules; a refund is not automatically taxable simply because a statement was issued. Qualifying older alimony agreements require their own facts and dates. The builder asks for confirmation of the relevant pre-2019 treatment, including the effect of later modifications.

How do the 1099-K notice and unemployment repayment work?
The 2025 original includes a top notice for amounts on Form 1099-K that were included in error or relate to personal items sold at a loss. That notice does not enter the builder’s income totals. Other transactions reported on the payment statement still need the appropriate tax treatment elsewhere.
Keep records of what was sold, its cost and the actual receipts. Do not use the notice as a general exclusion for all payment-app deposits. The IRS Form 1099-K guidance distinguishes transactions by their nature. A gross statement amount alone is not a complete profit calculation.
The unemployment controls require equal care. If a 2025 overpayment is repaid during 2025, establish the taxable Line 7 amount after the applicable repayment rule, then enter the repayment separately for its disclosure. The product does not subtract that disclosed repayment from Line 7 a second time.
Publication 525 for 2025 explains same-year unemployment repayments and distinguishes amounts repaid in a later year. Do not use the same-year field as a universal deduction for every repayment. Retain the benefit statement and evidence of the repayment date.
Our unemployment payment-records guide helps distinguish agency payment evidence from an employee pay stub. Neither record type replaces the tax classification and repayment work.
Which adjustment amounts need calculations before entry?
Enter an allowed deduction, not simply the amount paid or contributed. The product exposes fields for educator costs, certain employee expenses, HSA deductions, self-employment-related adjustments, IRA deductions, student-loan interest and other specified items. Their eligibility rules are not interchangeable.
For an IRA contribution, the contribution amount and deduction can differ. Compensation, retirement-plan coverage, filing status and income may affect the permitted result. The IRS IRA overview directs taxpayers to the relevant deduction worksheets and explains separate reporting for nondeductible contributions.
The student-loan-interest rules include qualification, filing-status and income conditions. A loan payment can contain principal as well as interest, and a lender statement does not eliminate the need to determine the allowed deduction.
The deductible part of self-employment tax comes from completed Schedule SE, rather than an arbitrary percentage of gross business receipts. Likewise, self-employed retirement and health-insurance entries require their applicable calculations. Keep each supporting form or worksheet with the main return work.
Some Page 2 amounts correspond to income already reported on Page 1. For example, the 2025 Form 1040 instructions provide a jury-pay adjustment when pay is given to an employer that continued the employee’s salary during jury service. Establish both entries instead of silently omitting the pay or entering a deduction without the corresponding facts.
How do the two totals reconcile in an example?
Assume a fictional single taxpayer has $48,000 of wages reported on the main return and a reviewed $2,400 positive Schedule E result. The taxpayer receives $2,300 of taxable state unemployment during 2025 and repays $500 of that same 2025 compensation in 2025, leaving $1,800 for Line 7.
The taxpayer also receives $300 of jury pay and gives all $300 to the employer because the employer continued the salary during service. Assume the completed eligibility work permits a $1,800 IRA deduction and $650 student-loan-interest deduction. There are no other income items, adjustments or special circumstances changing these amounts.
| Reviewed item | Amount | Destination or calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule E result | $2,400 | Part I, Line 5. |
| Taxable unemployment after repayment | $1,800 | $2,300 − $500; Line 7. |
| Jury pay received | $300 | Line 8h, included through Line 9. |
| Additional-income total | $4,500 | Line 10, transferred to the main return’s Line 8. |
| Allowed IRA deduction | $1,800 | Assumed reviewed Line 20 amount. |
| Allowed student-loan interest | $650 | Assumed reviewed Line 21 amount. |
| Jury pay remitted to employer | $300 | Line 24a under the stated salary-continuation facts. |
| Total adjustments | $2,750 | Line 26, transferred to the main return’s Line 10. |
| Illustrative main-return AGI | $49,750 | $48,000 + $4,500 − $2,750. |
Now assume a separate Form 1099-K reports $600 from a personal item that cost $900 and was sold at a loss. Under these stated facts, the $600 belongs in the special notice and is not added to the $4,500 income total. The personal loss does not become a $300 adjustment in this example.
The $500 unemployment repayment is already reflected in the $1,800 taxable figure. Deducting it again would incorrectly reduce income twice. Similarly, the jury-pay adjustment matches the stated $300 returned to the employer; it does not create an additional deduction beyond that amount.

Which sign conventions and controls should be checked?
The tool asks for positive magnitudes for the net-operating-loss, foreign-earned-income-exclusion and nontaxable Medicaid-waiver-payment subtraction fields. It applies their negative treatment automatically. Enter only the allowed amount from the relevant supporting work, not an unsupported negative number intended to reduce the total.
The Medicaid-waiver field specifically addresses qualifying nontaxable amounts already included in the indicated main-return wage entries. Do not use it to subtract the same exclusion twice. Ordinary digital-asset income likewise belongs in its special category only when it is not already reported elsewhere.
Leave Line 24z blank for 2025. Although the interface exposes a described “other adjustments” input, the reviewed 2025 IRS instructions expressly direct that Line 24z be left blank. Do not treat an available input as authorization for an unspecified deduction. Line 22 is also reserved and remains blank.
Other controls concern filing status, agreement dates and matching income limits. Complete them only when the underlying facts support them. A checked verification statement records your review; it does not generate the missing worksheet or prove eligibility.
How should the PDF and main return be checked together?
Review Page 1 against every source, including taxable portions, signs and the separate notice. Review Page 2 against the allowed deduction worksheets. Confirm each total’s destination on the main return, then compare the resulting income and adjustments with the source index.
The Form 1040 PDF builder guide explains the separately prepared main form. Schedule 1 has no standalone signature requirement on its original pages; the actual signing and filing obligations follow the return being submitted.
Check the live price before ordering, and remember that blank IRS forms can be obtained directly without a purchase. The order supplies the supported schedule PDF. It does not include every supporting schedule or deduction worksheet, file the return or pay any balance due.
Schedule 1 builder questions
Should I transfer one net total from both pages?
No. Additional income and adjustments have distinct totals and destinations. Transfer Line 10 and Line 26 separately to the applicable main-return lines.
Is Schedule 1-A included in this builder?
No. Its eligible tips, overtime, vehicle-loan-interest and senior deductions use a separate schedule and review process.
Does the 1099-K notice exclude all payment-platform receipts?
No. The special 2025 notice is limited to the specified error or personal-loss transactions. Other transactions require their proper reporting treatment.
Should I subtract a disclosed unemployment repayment again?
No. Establish the taxable Line 7 amount under the applicable rule first. The same-year repayment disclosure is not another automatic subtraction.
Can I use Line 24z for an otherwise unsupported adjustment?
No. The reviewed 2025 instructions say to leave that line blank, even though the interface exposes an input.
Is the illustration’s AGI the same as taxable income?
No. Its $49,750 result is adjusted gross income under the stated assumptions. Later deductions, tax, credits and payments require their own main-return calculations.
The Check Stubs Online Editorial Team reviewed the builder’s two parts against the cited primary guidance. The original example checks $2,400 + $1,800 + $300 = $4,500, $1,800 + $650 + $300 = $2,750, and $48,000 + $4,500 − $2,750 = $49,750. Allowed deductions and source classifications are assumed reviewed inputs.
